Yesterday Teri gave us two stories describing two very different couples. Can you pick out which couple is displaying Companionate Love? It’s Couple #2, Jane & Jack Smith.
Couple #1 may describe most marriages we see walk through our doors here at Imagine Hope, but Couple #2 contains the characteristics of Companionate Love that we will be describing all week.
So what does Companionate Love look like? Remember when you were dating and you spent all your energy into getting to know each other, your interests, hobbies and even joining in these hobbies? What about the time you set aside while you were dating to talk, text, and chat in hopes to learn pieces of information about the other? Companionate Love is like this, but on a more mature level.
After you’ve been dating someone for a while, that infatuation wears off (which is natural & normal) and you start to get into a routine. Unfortunately for some couples, a routine can mean complete cutoff where they hardly speak and share their experiences, or it can mean suffocation where they’re never apart and have privacy.
Companionate Love is a relationship where you feel connected with your significant other, emotionally safe, and respected. You also feel you have emotional safety and that you can problem solve with your mate as a team, versus having to figure things out on your own. Most importantly, you have privacy, and there are not secrets in Companionate relationships.
Over the next few days we’re going to discuss 7 key characteristics of Companionate Love relationships that Jack and Jane had in their marriage. Please check back in to see what those characteristics are, and to build those into your marriage as well. Thank you for reading.
